You're Not Behind
Have you ever looked around and quietly wondered if everyone else was moving forward while you were standing still?
Maybe someone else got the promotion you were hoping for. Maybe a friend seems to have found the peace you've been praying for. Maybe the answer you've been waiting on still hasn't come.
Comparison has a quiet way of convincing us that everyone else is ahead and we're somehow falling behind.
There was a season when I kept checking the clock on my own life. I found myself measuring my journey against other people's milestones and whispering the lie we don't always say out loud:
I'm behind.
Maybe you've whispered it too.
When the answer hasn't come, when the door hasn't opened, when you're faithfully showing up in the ordinary while everyone else seems to be living the extraordinary.
If that's where you are today, can I tell you something gentle and true?
You're not behind.
The Feeling Is Real, but the Timeline Is Not
We often feel behind for three gentle reasons.
1. We're measuring our inside with someone else's outside.
We see their highlight. We feel our waiting.
Social media, conversations, and even our own expectations can make us believe everyone else is moving ahead while we're standing still. But we're comparing our everyday life to someone else's carefully chosen moments.
2. We're living by a timeline we created.
By now I should be married.
By now I should have the career.
By now I should feel healed.
By now I should have figured it all out.
God never signed that timeline with us.
His plans have never been limited by the deadlines we place on ourselves.
3. Fear has been answering for us.
When fear is in the driver's seat, it tells us we're late, we're failing, and we're running out of time.
Peace tells a different story.
Fear says, "Hurry up or you'll miss it."
God says,
"My times are in your hands."
Psalm 31:15
God Has Never Been in a Hurry, but He Has Never Been Late
Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us:
"He has made everything beautiful in its time."
Not my time.
Not the timeline I imagined years ago.
Not the schedule comparison tells me I should be following.
In His time.
Your waiting isn't wasted.
The slow season you're in isn't a punishment. It may be preparation.
While you're waiting for what God is doing around you, He's also doing something within you. He's strengthening your faith, shaping your character, deepening your trust, and teaching you to depend on Him in ways success never could.
You are not late to the life God is writing for you.
You are right in the middle of it.
Second Peter 3:8 reminds us that with the Lord, a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day. God isn't bound by the calendar that so often stresses us out.
What It Looks Like to Come Back to Peace
If you feel behind today, try these gentle steps.
Notice the story.
When you catch yourself thinking, "I'm behind," pause and ask yourself if that's truth or fear speaking.
Return to today's grace.
Instead of focusing on everything you don't have yet, notice what God has already placed in your life today.
Name three gifts He's given you right now, no matter how small they seem.
Stay in today's lane.
Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:34 not to worry about tomorrow.
Each day has enough challenges of its own.
It also has enough grace of its own.
You don't have to catch up to an imaginary finish line.
You simply have to stay close to Jesus today.
A Gentle Reflection
Where do I feel behind right now?
Whose timeline am I comparing myself to?
What is one faithful, small step I can take today without rushing?
A Prayer
Father,
I confess that I often feel behind. I compare my journey with others and carry expectations You never placed on me.
Quiet the voice of comparison. Silence the pressure to hurry. Help me trust that my life is safely held in Your hands.
Remind me that You make everything beautiful in Your time. Teach me to walk at Your pace, rest in Your presence, and trust that You are working even when I cannot yet see it.
Thank You that I am not forgotten, not delayed, and not behind.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
You're not behind, friend.
You're becoming.
And you're exactly where God can continue shaping your heart for everything He has prepared for you.
With you in the quiet middle,
Jeronda
